Facilities Maintenance Manager (Temporary)

The City of Gardner is seeking a temporary Facilities Maintenance Manager to oversee the maintenance and upkeep of City-owned buildings and facilities, ensuring safe, clean, and functional environments for staff and the public. Reporting to the Building Commissioner, this position supervises maintenance staff, coordinates daily operations, responds to emergencies, and supports the efficient operation of municipal facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise, schedule, and assign work to maintenance staff

  • Plan, coordinate, and perform building maintenance and repairs (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical systems)

  • Monitor work in progress and inspect completed work for quality and safety

  • Coordinate and oversee contractors as needed

  • Support preventive maintenance programs and maintain records

  • Respond to emergency calls, on-call situations, and winter operations, including snow removal

  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and applicable regulations

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in commercial or institutional building maintenance

  • Strong skills in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and general building maintenance

  • Supervisory experience and basic computer skills

  • Valid Massachusetts driver’s license required

  • Journeyman-level licensure or equivalent experience preferred

This position is designated as an essential employee and requires availability for after-hours, weekend, and emergency response, including severe weather events.  This is a temporary assignment for an undetermined amount of time. 

Qualifications

Requires experience in at least two of the following areas: carpentry, painting, plumbing, plastering and/or other trades. Must have: • Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License. • Two (2) years experience in the building maintenance field. • Groundskeeping experience. • A combination of previous related work experience may be substituted for some of the above qualifications. • Ability to work alone or with little supervision is necessary. • Be available to work overtime when necessary.
