Name: Legislative Affairs Meeting
Date: September 14, 2018
Time: 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM EDT
Registration: Sorry, public registration for this event has been closed.
Event Description:
Agenda: Discussion regarding the three ballot questions being presented to Massachusetts voters this November;

Question 1 - Mandatory Nurse Patient staff ratios

We will discuss and plan a Town Hall style forum on this ballot question for a date in October.

Question 2 – Commission on limiting campaign contributions and rights of corporations

Question 2 would create a citizen commission to push a constitutional amendment to overturn the Citizens United v. FEC Supreme Court decision on campaign finance. This case held that the government could not restrict political spending by corporations. Proponents argue that this ruling increased the undue influence of money in politics and is “a serious and direct threat to our democracy.” If passed, Massachusetts’s top elected officials would appoint members to the 15-person commission, which would go on to research the current campaign finance system and recommend an amendment to overturn Citizens United.

Question 3 – Transgender Discrimination

Question 3, if passed, would repeal a state law passed in 2016 requiring places of public accommodation to accommodate transgendered people.

In addition, we will be discussing the role and responsibilities of the Legislative Affairs Committee. We hope to see you there as we discuss these important topics.
